Saint Patrick happens to be the patron saint of Ireland. It all becomes clear, right? Although the truth about his life has been difficult to determine thanks to so many legends that have surfaced over the years, one thing is for certain. St. Patrick was a Christian missionary who was credited with converting Ireland to Christianity during the 400s AD.
Why Is March 17th St. Patrick’s Day?
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th because that was the day of his death on 461 AD. He was believed to have passed away in a tiny village called Saul in Ireland. Oddly enough, Saul is located not too far from where St. Patrick is supposedly buried – in the town of Downpatrick in Down County. His legacy lives on annually with St. Patrick’s Day.
Why Do We Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day?
Aside from the obvious, when mid-March rolls around it is a sign that Spring is on the way. For many, being holed up all Winter any excuse to get out and party is worth a celebration.
